The UK Wind Power Backlash

Recent developments in the tidal power sector are causing many to speak out against the UK government’s reliance on wind power to ensure we meet our renewable energy goals. According to The Times, if the government wants to hit its target, the UK needs to build around 7,000 more wind-turbines – a high number if one considers the amount of not-in-my-back-yard-ism and anti-wind petitioning that meets nearly every planned wind farm.

However, as tidal power expert Bob Smith (of Pulse Tidal) argues, the backlash against wind in favour of tidal is not merely the voice of those who deem turbines ugly or a blot on the landscape – despite the fact that tidal turbines are out of sight. Quoted at, Smith commented: “Most importantly, the UK needs predictable sources of energy and tidal is entirely predictable, unlike wind; because water is more dense than air.”

Aside from making use of a more predictable energy source, tidal turbines can produce more energy from a smaller turbine system – resulting in lower installation costs. This is a positive factor that is highlighted by The Times’ article ‘Tilting at Wind Farms’ in which it is written that the Confederation of British Industry estimate that meeting the government’s 2030 carbon-emissions target will increase ‘the average British household bill from £1,243 today to £1,615.90.’

The same article goes on to quote Professor Jack Steinberger of CERN particle physics laboratory, Geneva. He argues that wind power is an uneconomic waste of resources – and explained his reasons to the Royal Society in May. Wind is now considered one of the most expensive forms of energy – costing six times the amount of gas and three times as much as nuclear.

In another twist in the renewable energy saga, even if the UK heeds the words of experts like Steinberger and Smith, wind energy may still be very much part of our future. Speaking in June, the Swedish Deputy Prime Minister announced that the country will soon be in the position to export wind power. The country’s economy, and rugged geography lends itself well to wind power – and is set to benefit further if other countries are willing to buy green energy from them.

Earth, Wind, Fire

Read 1 Kings 18-19 for the backgrounder. It’s an awesome story.

I finally understood the thing about the wind, earthquake, fire, and whisper.

Elijah wasn’t just some coward the way we always make him how to be. People always say “How could you lose faith after such an awesome miracle on carmel?” “How could this man run away like that as if nothing happened?”

But that’s precisely it. He thought that the hearts of Israel would be turned completely to the Lord after that. He thought King Ahab would be totally convinced. Jezebel too. He thought his days of running would be over because the Lord proved that Baal was no god, slaughtered all baal’s prophets, and finally sent rain. That should’ve been it. That awesome display of power and authority should’ve done the job. Or so Elijah thought.

But this is what happened. When Elijah came back to Jezreel there was a messenger that came to him with a message from Jezebel the Queen… Jezebel the Prophet-Killer. Basically she was saying “YOURE DEAD!”. Jezebel was still after him, no one in israel would stand up for him, and it was as if nothing happened. He thought everything would change, that everything would be different after that showcase on the mountain. Apparently, nothing changed. He was still on the run. Israel was still steeped in their sin and their hearts were not turned towards God.

So Elijah ran away. And God intercepted him and basically said “If you’re running away, let’s meet together on top of that mountain over there”. And then that famous encounter with Earth, Wind and Fire happened. God asked Elijah “What are you doing here”. It was like he was asking “Why did you run away? Why are you so disappointed? What did you think would happen? Did you really think that after Carmel, everyone would turn to me? Let me teach you something. I want you to stand at the mouth of the cave because I am coming.”

First there was a great wind. But God wasn’t in the wind. Elijah knew it. So Elijah didn’t move.

Then there was a great earthquake. Elijah knew that God wasn’t in there either.

Then there was a great fire. You know these things don’t happen everyday my friend. But Elijah knew God wasn’t in the fire so he stayed put.

Then there was a gentle whisper. Elijah knew that whisper. He went out. God really was there. And God asked him again “Elijah, what are you doing here”

By then, I think Elijah was getting the point. What point is that? This whole thing, that’s God’s way of saying- yes these grand miracles I’ve done- sending a blazing fire on the flooded altar consuming the sacrifice and the 12 tankfulls of water, and a great rain I sent after 7 years of drought… these are magnificent and tell of my grandeur. But what changes the hearts of men is my gentle whisper. I do it subtly. I speak to each of them. The grand miracles change their minds but only for a day. I am found in the whispers in their hearts. And that’s how I change the hearts of men.

God was trying to console Elijah’s disappointment that the big miracles didn’t seem to work. He reminded Elijah that HE was still at work. That the story doesn’t end there. It never really does.

Think about it, after all the plagues in Egypt, Pharoah’s heart was still hard. We’re always expecting these big miracles to change the world. God still does them to show the world how great he is. But the more awesome thing about God is that there’s that gentle whisper- maybe not all hear, or maybe all hear but do not respond. God is in the whisper. And God is whispering now.

What do you look for everyday? Earth, Wind and Fire? Or God’s voice? What do you think will change the world at the end of the day? Earth, Wind and Fire? Oh that will change the world alright. But not the hearts of men. If you want your heart to change, look for that whisper. If you want to join God in changing the world, look for that whisper. I have no doubt that miracles can surround your life if you truly believe. But what’s greater than the Wind, greater than the Earthquake, greater than the Fire, is the gentle whisper of God’s voice, speaking his word of truth.

Take heart and know that this story isn’t over yet. When you are disappointed that change hasn’t come. Remember that God is still whisper, and the world needs to hear it.

Kansas Wind Farms

While the State of Kansas offers diverse landscapes, it is often noted for its flat landscapes and open prairie lands in several areas of the state. This topography presents ideal conditions for wind farms and the ability to harness wind power for energy use. Wind farms need to be located in areas with consistent wind speeds averaging 10 mph (miles per hour) or greater to be successful. According to the American Wind Energy Association, Kansas places 12th on the list of states for wind capacity.

What are Wind Farms?

Wind farms consist of a group of wind turbines located together that gather energy from the wind as it blows. This energy is transformed into electricity and can provide homeowners and businesses with a “green” form of power to serve their needs. Green power is the preferred method of providing energy, as it does not leave a “carbon footprint” in its wake. Green power is noted as coming from “clean” or “alternative” energy sources. The Great Smoky Hills Wind Farm

The Great Smoky Hills wind farm, located just 19 miles west of Salina, was built by Enel, the Italian renewable energy developer. Enel sells power and gas to a huge market throughout 22 countries, including Europe and Latin America, as well as North America. The plant in Salina is expected to produce 250 MW (megawatts) of wind energy, which is enough to provide power to 85,000 homes.

Phase I of the wind farm became operational in January 2008. This first phase involved 56 turbines that were capable of providing 101 MW of energy. Phase II provided 99 additional turbines, with a further capacity of 149 MW of energy, beginning in December 2008. The plant did experience a setback, however, when a transformer failed at the same time that Phase II was set to become operational. These transformers are unique enough that a replacement was not readily available. It took a few months, therefore, to get the new transformer ready to go. Operations were back online and running smoothly in May 2009.

A New Factory in Hutchinson

Siemens Energy Company, based in Germany, recently announced plans to build a factory to manufacture equipment parts for wind farms in Hutchinson, Kansas. This new factory will bring many employment opportunities for the citizens of Hutchinson as well as the surrounding areas. The estimated $ 50 million wind turbine parts plant is expected to employ 400 people. The main function of this wind farm will be to manufacture a component of the wind turbine called nacelles. Nacelles are the oblong pieces, located at the top of the wind towers, containing gears, electronics, and generating components.

Siemens chose to place this factory in Hutchinson because of its central geographic location in the United States and its efficient transportation access. The total capacity of the plant is estimated to be 650 nacelles per year, which equates to 1,500 MW. The first nacelle is expected to be shipped from the plant in December 2010.

Other Kansas Wind Farms

Other wind farms in Kansas include Gray County (40.8 percent wind capacity factor), Elk River (44.1 percent wind capacity factor), and Spearville (47.2 wind capacity factor). Gray County Wind Farm was built in 2001 and is located in Montezuma, Kansas. The average wind speed at this farm is 20 mph. The Elk River Wind Farm came online in December 2005, and the Spearville Wind Project had its formal dedication in October 2006.

Wind Power’s Disadvantages

The use of wind power is like endlessly viable alternative energy source.

The most off cited reason is that there is zero pollution associated with the use of wind based power. However, there is an additional benefit that some may not be aware of. Wind is available in abundance anywhere and everywhere on the earth. This makes wind a much more pragmatic source of energy since exploration and excavation is not part of the equation. America launches offshore wind farm: Cape Wind

Offshore wind has been given the go-ahead for construction in Cape Cod. The nation’s first lease for commercial offshore wind energy development was signed at the American Wind Energy Association’s (AWEA) North American Offshore Wind Conference in Atlantic City. The wind cape can save 100 million dell studio 1558 battery  power.  On stage in front of an eager group of photographers and applauding crowd, U.S. Interior Sec. The lease authorizes Cape Wind to construct an offshore wind farm with 130, 3.6-MW Siemens turbines on Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound, and to operate the facility for a period of 25 years. Gordon says the area is well-suited for the wind farm, with its shallow water, low wave regime, and reasonable proximity to transmit power by under-sea cables, which will run underground to a land fall and the existing grid in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The company expects the project to have a maximum capacity of about 468 MW, and on average produce about 182 MW. On average, the farm will supply 75% of electricity for Cape and islands, meaning Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Cape Cod. We can store these dell studio 1555 battery  in cool place.

Since the project’s inception, there’s been quite a shift in public opinion, according to Gordon. “When we started ten years ago, I think there was a visceral reaction,” he says. “There were those who rushed out trying to define the project through misinformation and fear-mongering because of competitive business interest or fears about property values.” However, over the ensuing years and particularly after the draft environmental impact statements came out, Gordon says national environmental organizations like NRDC, The Union of Concerned Scientists, Greenpeace, and The Sierra Club started to support the Cape Wind project, along with organized labor and health and consumer advocates. We’re at a position where we’re ready to start construction.” Gordon says an opposition group funded by coal and oil interests has also tried to stop the project, but the company has overcome their barriers and delaying tactics. Cape Wind’s goal is to start construction during the third quarter of 2011 and complete by the end of 2012. Do not fully discharge your battery too frequently.

Gordon explains the next step is for the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities to approve the Cape Wind national grid power agreement. “We just completed three weeks of hearings last month, where every aspect of the contract is scrutinized,” he says. “We believe we built a solid evidentiary record for approval. Although the company doesn’t see an expansion opportunity within Horseshoe Shoal, Gordon says they will look for other opportunities for more projects in Massachusetts and across the country. And with a U.S. Department of Energy draft plan that calls for the installation of 54,000 MW of offshore wind power capacity by the year 2030 (which would require more than 100 Cape Wind-sized projects) Cape Wind won’t be the only one searching.
