Generators come in a lot of forms. There are solar, electrical, fossil fuel and wind generators. The source does make a difference in its operation and how it impacts the environment. In this time of extensive efforts to stop harming our beloved planet a wind power generators are the ones which leave the lesser footprint. The world has been dependant on fossil fuels for so long now that wind energy is considered new science though it has been around hundreds of years as the windmills in Holland can attest. Let us examine this wind power and see how it works.
A wind-powered generator has less moving parts than its fossil fuel cousins. It has the capacity to off set 1.2 tons of the damaging pollutants that are given off by the use of fossil fuels. This makes the air more breathable for all. Then there are the 200 tons per person green house gases released each year, producing electricity. With the wind power generators this is eliminated completely.
Wind energy is indeed a form of solar generated energy. It is the radiation of heat from old SOL that creates the conditions that make the wind we feel in the morning breeze or see sweeping across the rushes and moving in the trees. The sun heats different areas of the earth at different points in the day and because the heart absorbs heat at varying levels throughout its circumference hot air rises from the surface. This rising creates a vacuum, cooler air rushes forward to fill this void, this is what we have termed the wind. We have only scratched the surface of the forces potential as power generators. In the past it was used to run mills, water pumps and to power sailboats.
Harnessing wind power to create an abundance of electrical power is a new concept. The wind power generator is mounted on towers that are as much as 120 feet tall. Up in the air that high the turbines by pass most of the turbulence and gain greater access to wind currents. This in turn provides a better flow of kinetic energy through the turbines. The wind power generators convert kinetic energy to electricity. This can be used to power homes, plants and other buildings. There must be a secondary utility meter attached to each unit receiving this energy to make certain of the compatibility with existing wiring.
Homes are generally connected to both wind and normal power grids. This is a precaution in case there is little or no air current sufficient to power the wind generator. The best thing is that on those days that you are producing an over abundance the electric company is obliged to buy it from you its a law. If you do not sell it, there is the option of storing it in batteries.
It is recommended that only people with an acre or more of land in order to make use of these wind power generators. Also some localities have building codes. There is the FAA regulations and of course the expense to contend with.
